YouTube – Pure Imagination. I definitely like Gene Wilder vs Johnny Depp. Depp made him seem creepy in a bad way. In a documentary with Gene Wilder, he agrees! He said that he hated what they forced Willy Wonka to become in the remake. He wasn’t shy about expressing his opinion.
The rest of the interview with Gene Wilder was tough. At times it seemed like he was confused or wasn’t sure what he wanted to say. It was difficult to watch someone who was so subtly brilliant in his acting to not always be able to articulate his thoughts. I think that is a fear of many people. That as we grow we may not be able to make decisions and decide our fate.
What made this video and song so pivotal to me and many others I’m sure was that we were lost in the movie. I love it when you forget it’s a movie, but rather are involved with the story and not stop to question the logic or characters. In the best movies you can just abandon yourself to the story like a good book. It may not always be the story you want, and if it has surprises even better, but you become a part of it. That is what is so amazing in art and culture. That we can step outside ourself and take part in the reality of other people’s universe. Not as an intellectual “concept” but as an emotional and spiritual one. What a gift that is!
In Pure Imagination you gave us a great gift Mr. Wilder in not only Willy Wonka but in our childhood and adding to the sense of wonder and hope that anything is possible. You made the irrational rational, the implausible real. Thank you.
