It is featured on Netflix and talks about how other countries perceive the United States. Many things they say make sense. It is strange that so many people both hate and love the US. I have had the good fortune to travel to Mexico in the past and loved it. I look forward to traveling more in the future.
As an US citizen what can we do to affect the world in a positive way? It is easy to feel hopeless. I think the only thing we can do to make things better is to examine ourselves and ask if our actions on a daily basis are kind and loving towards others. The passion of the people in this documentary is deep. You see examples in their life about how the US has both helped and harmed them.
I wanted to share something from my past experience in Mexico. I found poor people to be the most generous people I ever met. One time in Mexico I had run low on money and due to a complex back story, found myself with very little money. Not even enough to rent a hotel room. I had a poor friend ask another poor friend to take me in their crowded house. You should have seen the surprise of the family when they were told a poor American needed to stay with them. The kids came over and looked at me to see if I was really white. I gave them some of the candy I had and slept on a very crude grass mat.
The next day I got a transfer of money and went back to that house and explained that I was given money and that I was ok now. I offered the owner some money and he didn’t want to take it. It wasn’t pride but just recognition that doing a good deed is its own reward. I insisted that he take it because I saw their kitchen and we all went to bed without dinner that night. When you see people live like that, you really see how spoiled we are. It’s not bad that we have money, but it’s often anti-social the way that we choose to spend it.
