I am watching a documentary called Garrison Keillor: The Man on the Radio in the Red Shoes. I’m not really fond of his musical guests, or many things he does, but he can be very funny. One of the funniest jokes I ever heard was during a pledge drive once. I was driving the car and he talked about getting lost in the woods and a crazed bear with a chainsaw. It was hilarious.
In this documentary he shares that he once imagined that he would be an old person without friends and didn’t want that to happen. Instead he has made millions of friends by inviting people into his world, and valuing the skills and abilities of others. One of the touching things is to see him authentically interact with people both on and off stage. He respects and listens to people. He allows people to have a voice even while he expresses his own. The fact that his show has gone on for 37 years is amazing.
He says we live in the past. Perhaps some of us do. I really believe that living in the present is ultimately more rewarding. I think you can appreciate people and things from the past without letting it dominate your life.
